Here is my Letter to the Editor that appeared in The State Journal of Frankfort, KY on Sunday, January 24:
To the Editor:
Linda Boileau’s wonderful cartoon in The State Journal of Friday, January 15, described eloquently how Haiti’s earthquake disaster has not been able to crush the hand of compassion to the Haitian people. It is very moving to see how the United States, its people, and the people and nations of the world are responding to the tragedy in this extremely poor country. It has also been quite an occurrence of the mission teams of Capital City Christian Church being present and our learning of their ongoing work there. I especially note the amazing work of Raymonde Jacques and the Haitian Needy Children Foundation. All of these deeds mark compassion in action.
In the same paper, the Rev. Chuck Queen wrote in his column, A Fresh Perspective, of Nobel Peace Prize winner, Adolfo Perez Esquivel, who had been imprisoned by the military dictatorship of Argentina. During his imprisonment, Esquivel underwent a transformative experience where he acquired great compassion for his torturers and oppressors. “He realized,” Queen wrote, “that they were all children of God and the only way he could communicate this truth would be to forgive them and pursue a course for peace.” Here is another example of compassion in action, maybe something from which our country could learn. After all, Jesus did say to love both our neighbors and our enemies.
